Why It’s Important To Have A Defib In Manufacturing?

Stress is one of the biggest contributing causes of sudden cardiac arrest and in the manufacturing industry, according to HSE (Health and Safety Executive) 41% of workplace ill health cases reported as stress. It feels rewarding when everyone pulls together and works extra hard to meet that production deadline. And you’re probably familiar with the fatigue and burnout that can accompany this type of job. But it’s situations like this that put people in manufacturing at particular risk of work-related cardiac arrest. At Defib Machines our team have been working tirelessly to help manufacturing businesses across the UK implement defibrillator machines to protect the workforce from any unfortunate cardiac arrests within the workplace.

Contributing factors:

On top of that, long shifts and unusual working patterns mean many employees are living with varying degrees of sleep deprivation. The link between lack of sleep and heart health has been well documented, and the recommendation from the British Heart Foundation is that adults need between 6 – 8 hours of sleep per night. The reality is that many people working in manufacturing aren’t regularly getting enough sleep for optimum heart health.

What can you do to promote heart health to staff?

While there’s not much you can do to change the demands of manufacturing itself, you can be proactive in promoting heart health for all members of your company.

Some methods of promoting heart health in your manufacturing company include:

Encourage regular rest breaks
Ensure employees’ shift patterns allow for adequate sleep
Provide access to resources and training to educate employees on how to keep their heart healthy
Keep up-to-date with first aid training
Provide heart-healthy snacks, meals and drinks

Preparedness is also key. It’s a sad fact that every day, 200 people suffer from sudden cardiac arrest, with a large percentage of these happening in the workplace. While most of these happen at home, the workplace is the second most common place for somebody to be affected. When it does happen, the likelihood of survival and recovery is directly dependent on how quickly resuscitation occurs, which can only be successful with an AED.

In order to provide your employees with the best chance at full recovery from cardiac arrest, you need to ensure that quality medical grade equipment is on hand -m and that it can be used by any member of staff, regardless of training.

So in addition to preventative measures, the most proactive measure you can take to protect the heart health of your employees is to:

Install an AED defibrillator

How much does it cost to install a defibrillator?
It costs just £1 per day to install a defibrillator when you choose a long term defibrillator rental plan from Defib Machines. This includes all aspects of installation and maintenance, plus training resources so that anyone can be prepared to save a life. The machine provides audible instructions, which will walk the user through how to use the device too.
