Defib MAchine supports Sudden Cardiac Arrest Charity

PROUD COLLABORATION: DEFIB MACHINES x SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST UK

Working together to raise awareness, provide effective peer support, and ensure life-saving equipment is ready when it matters most.

TOGETHER FOR LIFE-SAVING IMPACT

Defib Machines is proud to collaborate with Sudden Cardiac Arrest UK, a leading charity dedicated to supporting those affected by cardiac arrest. This partnership brings together our expertise in providing defibrillators and ongoing service with their commitment to awareness, education, and peer support.

By working together, we're making sure that more workplaces, communities, and individuals not only have access to defibrillators but also the knowledge and confidence to use them when it matters most. This collaboration reflects our shared mission: to save lives and provide ongoing support for those impacted by sudden cardiac arrest.

COMMON CAUSES

  • Cardiac causes (heart-related issues)
  • Lack of oxygen / asphyxiation
  • Electrocution
  • Use of drugs
  • Trauma or poisoning
  • Natural end of life

In hospital vs. out of hospital

pulse

Events are often described as occurring either in hospital or out of hospital. Out-of-hospital cardiac arrests rely on bystanders to be first on scene, making public access to AEDs and trained responders critical.

WHAT CAN TRIGGER AN SCA?

  • Heavy alcohol consumption or binge drinking
  • Strenuous physical exertion without regular exercise
  • Recreational drugs (e.g., cocaine, amphetamines, marijuana)
  • Excess caffeine intake, especially for non-regular coffee drinkers
  • Severe emotional stress
  • Influenza (flu) infection in the prior month

WHO IS AT HIGHER RISK?

  • Heart problems: CAD, arrhythmias (e.g., atrial fibrillation/long QT), structural heart disease
  • Age: risk increases with age
  • Sex: higher incidence in men overall
  • Race & ethnicity: some groups have higher risk
  • Family history: inherited electrical/conduction disorders
  • Other medical conditions: diabetes, electrolyte imbalance, respiratory arrest, certain medications

CAN SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST BE PREVENTED?

Not all cases are preventable, but a heart‑healthy lifestyle and managing conditions can lower risk.

  • Stop smoking; limit alcohol; avoid recreational drugs
  • Eat a balanced, nutrient‑rich diet
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stay physically active
  • Manage blood pressure, cholesterol & diabetes
  • Limit excessive caffeine
  • Work with your healthcare provider on a personalised plan

Note: For those at high risk, doctors may recommend an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).

Learning CPR and knowing how to use an AED dramatically increases survival chances.
